Why the Democratic Party Refuses to Release their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its own autopsy report on the 2024 election appears shocking however to be expected. Averse to hard truths, the party's leadership apparatus operates closer to a publicity machine than a political organization committed to building local power for winning elections.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has continued under the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Releasing such a report could have demonstrated whether the leadership actually want to promote open debate about the errors that enabled Donald Trump to become president again. Yet, the committee is acting under the pretense that there's nothing to be learned following the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

The top priority: will this lead to victory? If not, it’s a distraction from what truly matters," a justification reportedly given for withholding the analysis.

Critical Problems an Analysis Might Have Examined

A genuine analysis with any value would not dodge a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Voter Alienation: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the party's candidate in 2020 proved pivotal during the tight recent race.
  • The Decision to Seek Re-election: The stubborn choice by the incumbent to stay in the race, coupled with an extremely delayed withdrawal, is viewed as robbing Democratic voters the chance for a genuine choice.
  • Abandoning the Working-Class Base: During a time of inflation, the campaign is criticized for ceding to elite contributors while failing to address the effects of big business.
  • The Gaza Effect: An unwillingness to adjust a stance on a ongoing war is cited as driving away many voters, notably among youth voters, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • Losing Youth Allegiance: Polling data demonstrates a significant decrease of Democratic support from voters aged 18-29.

A Pattern of Evasion

Choosing secrecy is consistent with a longstanding habit of evading hard truths. This mirrors an episode where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress supported an incumbent's insistence on running for re-election right up until a catastrophic televised debate led to a change.

At the same time, overwhelming numbers within the party's base had been repeatedly informing surveyors of their opposition to that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Issues

A substantive analysis might also probe questions regarding campaign spending, such as the amounts flowed to insider consultants as well as ad buyers during an electoral effort that burned through a staggering sum during the general election.

A Larger Issue

Ultimately, the secrecy regarding the analysis is symptomatic of a deference to party leaders who engineered an unsuccessful national race. The implication to rank-and-file members – which includes millions of dedicated activists – is that they cannot have a right to know the lessons the leadership have learned based on an analysis drawing from extensive interviews.

A party unwilling to honestly assess its own failings is unlikely to climb out of the cycle that proved so helpful to their opponents.
