British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
