Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
